Description

This guy was just asking to be caricatured. :D

For those unfamiliar with the Grumman OV-1 Mohawk they were used primarily as battlefield surveillance aircraft during the Vietnam War up to Desert Storm by the United States Army, retiring in the mid 90's, they've since been replaced by drones, satellites, and other fixed wing aircraft. An interesting tidbit of info, back in the 60's the U.S. Army was very interested in acquiring a fixed wing STOL(very short takeoffs and landings) jet like the Harrier. The Air Force feeling they were the only one's who could operate jet powered land based equipment prohibited the ability for the Army to acquire a jet since they're primary responsibility was helicopters, and some smaller cargo haulers. Seeing a golden opportunity the Army went ahead and decided to purchase a very unique little plane Grumman had been working on, the OV-1 didn't break the rule of being jet powered *cough*even though it was a turboprop, and enabled the boots on the ground excellent battlefield intelligence, plus the ability to takeoff from extremely short football field sized runways. Although they were used primarily for intelligence gathering they could and often did carry a small amount of armament including gun-pods, rocket pods, grenade launchers, for self defense and ground support. One Mohawk actually did manage to shoot down a Vietnamese MiG-17 with his rocket canister as it flew past the slower OV-1, this wasn't acknowledge until decades later. I've always loved seeing this plane at airshows as there are quite a few owned by civilians now, it's definitely cool to see a plane with propellers start spooling up and whining like a fighter jet.
